In my younger years I tackled my gardens with a feverous pitch. I was after instant gratification. So off to the local nursery I would go. A couple of hundred dollars’ worth of annuals later and after a few hours of planting I had my success. Voila! My garden was full of color.
Then came the real work. Watering, fertilizing, watering and fertilizing. It seemed endless. Some would die because they got too much water. Others would die because they didn’t get enough. Sure, there was still plenty of color remaining, but the time and expense of taking care of these pretty little annuals was always a lot. By the end of the summer my water bill alone was as much or more than I paid for the annuals in the first place.
Now, try and go on vacation. Oh no! You can’t do that. Who is going to water my annuals every other day or so? You could impose on your neighbor. I’m sure they have nothing better to do. Right? You always have to consider your blooming annuals before deciding on a vacation.
I was sure there must be a better way. So, as the years went by I began to rethink my gardening plans. I began to experiment with perennial plants. But, my first impression was a shock. Perennial plants were expensive. Thirty, fifty or ninety dollars wasn’t out of line for perennials. And, then it normally would take up to three years for them to get established and bloom well. On top of that, the vast majority of perennial plants only bloomed for one to two weeks each year. Now, that was really disheartening.
So, I began to look for perennial flowers that had longer bloom seasons. I knew somewhere out there was the gardener’s dream flower. I soon stumbled across a few of the exceptions to the short bloom season rule. Garden Phlox quickly became one of my favorites. Tall and stately, they bloomed their silly little heads off. I also quickly became a fan of certain sages (various salvias). But, something was missing in my garden. A different plant texture. A different style of flower.
Then it happened. One day while visiting an old friend’s house a flower off in the distance in her garden caught my eye. As we wandered through the garden, the closer I got the more impressed I was with this beautiful flower. She explained to me this particular line of perennials were drought tolerant, disease resistant and were virtually unaffected by insects. And, they bloomed for up to six weeks. And, many of the newer varieties bloomed again later in the summer. Easy to grow? Run them over with a lawn mower and they’ll come right back. They multiplied fast and were very simple to divide. Ta Da! I had just discovered my new favorite perennial flower. Daylilies.
A lot of years have passed since then. And, I still plant a few annuals each year. But my garden consists mostly of perennials. Phlox, Sages, Asters, etc. are still scattered around the beds. The perennials all look great. In the long run it has been much cheaper to grow them over the every year costs of annuals. And, some 30 years later I am still on my quest to find the gardener’s next perfect flower.
Oh. And what about daylilies you ask? Well, they are still on the top of my list as the best perennial flower ever. I consider them the backbone of any flower garden. They are, in fact, the most popular perennial flower in the world. And, they can be grown anywhere from Canada to the Arizona desert. What more could a gardener ask for in a flower? And as for me, last year I grew over 40,000 of those beautiful daylilies.
Try growing daylilies and see for yourself. I have a hunch you’ll be hooked from the first bloom.
